Wyoming Basketball Enters New Era with Sundance Wicks at the Helm
The University of Wyoming has made a significant move in the world of college basketball, hiring former assistant Sundance Wicks as the new men’s basketball coach. This decision comes after Jeff Linder’s departure to become the top assistant coach at Texas Tech.
Wicks, a native of Wyoming, brings a wealth of experience to the table, having spent time as an assistant coach at San Francisco, Northern Illinois, and Colorado. His most recent stint as the head coach at Green Bay saw him lead the Phoenix to an impressive 18-14 record, a 15-win improvement from the previous season.
New era begins for Wyoming basketball
“I am honored, humbled, and immensely grateful for this opportunity at the University of Wyoming,” Wicks said in a statement. “You cannot put into words what it means for a kid from the country roads outside of Gillette to represent the State of Wyoming and the Cowboys as their new head basketball coach.”
Wicks’ passion for the state of Wyoming is evident in his words, and his commitment to the program is clear. As he takes the reins, he’ll be looking to build on the Cowboys’ 16 NCAA tournament appearances, including their most recent appearance in 2022 under Linder.
“If there is one thing I learned growing up in Wyoming, it’s that when you Honor the Brown and Gold, you are honoring so much more than just the University of Wyoming,” Wicks said. “You are honoring every single hard hat that woke up before the sun to work the coal mines. … Honoring the Brown and Gold is the understanding that a tip of the cap, a steering wheel wave, a hard handshake or a big hug is how you lift your people up in support of a hard day’s work.”
Wicks brings a new era of energy to Wyoming basketball
As Wicks embarks on this new chapter, he’ll be looking to instill a sense of pride and community within the program. With his extensive coaching experience and deep roots in Wyoming, he’s poised to bring a fresh perspective to the Cowboys.
“Sundance will bring a great energy to our program and the entire State of Wyoming,” Wyoming athletic director Tom Burman said. “Being a native of this great state, Wicks knows the pride Cowboy fans take in the program and he will work tirelessly for his student-athletes and the community.”
As the Cowboys look to the future, one thing is clear: Sundance Wicks is the right man for the job. With his passion, experience, and dedication to the state of Wyoming, he’s poised to lead the Cowboys to new heights.
