As a BYU men’s basketball fan, I was on the edge of my seat when Dallin Hall entered the transfer portal a couple of months ago. With 15 schools vying for his services, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that he would leave the program. But in a surprise move, Hall decided to return to BYU, citing his relationship with new coach Kevin Young and the program’s potential to help him achieve his goals.
According to Hall, he and Young quickly built a strong relationship, with Young sharing his vision for the team and how Hall fit into it. Young’s experience as the associate head coach of the Phoenix Suns was a major draw for Hall, who sees the NBA as a realistic goal for his basketball career.
“Just talking about how he saw me fitting in his style of play, the things that he wanted to help me grow my game in order to make those dreams of being a pro reality,” Hall said. “So that combination, as well as just the relationship that we built over that time, is ultimately what helped me feel really good about coming back here and accomplishing all my goals on and off the court.”
Hall’s decision to return to BYU is a significant boost to the program, which has been in flux since coach Mark Pope left for Kentucky. With Hall on board, the Cougars have a solid foundation to build around, and Young’s experience should help the team compete at a high level.
