The incident, which took place during a school day, has left the community stunned and raised questions about the teacher’s behavior.

According to the police, the teacher, identified as James Bellamy, was playing basketball with the students when the incident occurred. The student, who was 12 years old, was allegedly struck by Bellamy after he believed the student had intentionally hit him while playing.

“The child told Officers Bellamy called him back out onto the court and then threw the ball at him, but he was able to duck and not get hit by it,” the police statement read.

The student further alleged that Bellamy struck him in the face with his elbow, knocking out one of his teeth.
