USA Basketball Roster Takes Shape Ahead of Paris Olympics
The road to the Paris Olympics has begun, and the USA Basketball roster is starting to take shape. According to sources, Caitlin Clark, the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer, will not be joining the team. Clark, who recently led Iowa to the Final Four, was invited to the national training camp in Cleveland but was unable to attend due to her college commitments.
USA Basketball looks to defend its Olympic title
Despite Clark’s absence, the team boasts an impressive lineup, including five-time gold medalist Diana Taurasi, who will be competing in her sixth Olympics. Taurasi will be joined by her Phoenix Mercury teammate Brittney Griner, who is set to play internationally for the first time since her release from a Russian prison in 2022.
“I’ll only play abroad with USA Basketball,” Griner said in a statement.
The team will also feature Olympic veterans Breanna Stewart, A’ja Wilson, Napheesa Collier, Jewell Loyd, and Chelsea Gray. Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young, who helped the U.S. win the inaugural 3x3 gold medal at the Tokyo Games in 2021, will also be joining the team.
Taurasi will break the record for most Olympics played in basketball
Alyssa Thomas, Sabrina Ionescu, and Kahleah Copper, who all played on the American team that won the World Cup in Australia in 2022, will be making their Olympic debuts.
The U.S. women’s basketball team has won every gold medal since the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and will be looking to continue their dominance in Paris.
The team will train together in Phoenix in July before heading to London for an exhibition game against Germany. They will then face Japan, Belgium, and Germany in pool play at the Olympics.
