USA Basketball Announces Roster for 2024 Paris Olympics
The USA Basketball Women’s National Team has been announced, and it’s packed with talent. The team, which will compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics, features a mix of veterans and newcomers, including Diana Taurasi, who will be making her record sixth Olympic appearance.
A Star-Studded Roster
The team includes 12 athletes with extensive USA Basketball experience, including nine who have already earned at least one Olympic gold medal. The roster is highlighted by Taurasi, who has played more games than any other women’s player in USA Basketball Olympic history (38) and is second in points scored (414).
Other returners from the Tokyo Olympics include Breanna Stewart, A’ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray, Napheesa Collier, Jewell Loyd, and Brittney Griner. Newcomers to the team include Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young, who helped the U.S. win the inaugural 3x3 gold medal at the Tokyo Games in 2021.
A Mix of Veterans and Newcomers
The team also features several first-time Olympians, including Alyssa Thomas, Sabrina Ionescu, and Kahleah Copper. All three played on the American team that won the World Cup in Australia in 2022.
“It’s a great mix of talent across the board in terms of individual skill sets,” said USA Basketball CEO Jim Tooley. “We have veterans, newcomers, and those in the middle. Good perspective and continuity is such an important thing and is why we’ve been successful in the Olympics.”
The Team’s Journey to Paris
The USA women will hold training camp in Phoenix before competing against the WNBA All-Stars in the league’s All-Star Game on Saturday, July 20. The team will then travel to London to play the German Women’s National Team at O2 Arena on July 23.
The Road to Gold
The American women are seeking their eighth straight Olympic gold medal and 10th overall. They will open group play against Japan on July 29, followed by Belgium on August 1 and Germany on August 4.
“I think it just gives you something to work for,” said Caitlin Clark, who was left off the roster due to lack of experience. “It’s a dream. Hopefully one day I can be there. I think it’s just a little more motivation. You remember that. Hopefully when four years comes back around, I can be there.”
The USA women are poised to make a strong run in the Paris Olympics, with a talented roster and a wealth of experience. Will they be able to bring home their eighth straight gold medal?
