Brazil celebrates their Olympic qualification

Brazil’s Road to Paris

Brazil has returned to Olympic competition in emphatic fashion after missing the Games in Tokyo three years ago. They dominated Latvia 94-69 in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, with Bruno Caboclo leading the charge with 21 points. Leo Meindl added 20 points, and the team’s 8-0 run in the first quarter set the tone for the rest of the game.

“My dad was a basketball player, and his dream was to play in the Olympic Games,” Meindl said. “I’m making this for me, for him, and for my family. I’m feeling on the clouds.”

Brazil will join Japan, Germany, and France in Group B at Paris 2024.

Greece’s Historic Win

Greece has qualified for the Olympic Games for the first time since Beijing 2008, when they finished fifth. Giannis Antetokounmpo led the charge with 23 points, and Georgios Papagiannis added 19. The team’s 80-69 win over Croatia was a real team effort, with three players finishing in double figures.

“The best athletes in the world compete in the Olympic Games,” Antetokounmpo said. “We have nothing to lose. … I really believe we have an incredible team, and we can accomplish something special.”

Greece will be placed in Group A for the Olympics, alongside Australia, Canada, and Spain.

Spain’s Sixth Consecutive Olympic Berth

Spain has earned its seventh consecutive Olympic berth after holding off the Bahamas 86-78. Rudy Fernandez is going to the Olympics for the sixth time, a first for any men’s basketball player. Lorenzo Brown had 18 points, Willy Hernangomez added 14, and Santiago Aldama chipped in 12.

“We’re looking forward to the Olympics,” Fernandez said. “We have a great team, and we’re excited to compete against the best teams in the world.”

Spain will join Greece, Australia, and Canada in Group A at Paris 2024.

The Road Ahead

The Olympics are more than just fun and games – they’re a billion-dollar business with political overtones. But for these four teams, the focus is on the court. They’ll face stiff competition from the likes of the United States, Serbia, and Japan, but they’re ready for the challenge.
