The Gonzaga-Washington Rivalry Game: A Missed Opportunity

As the 2024-25 college basketball season approaches, fans of the Gonzaga Bulldogs and Washington Huskies were eagerly anticipating their annual rivalry game. However, it has been confirmed that the matchup will not take place this season. According to sources, the Huskies were slated to visit Spokane for a non-conference game, but the plans have been scrapped.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs will have to wait another year to face their in-state rivals.

The Gonzaga-Washington rivalry has been a staple of the college basketball calendar in recent years, with the Bulldogs dominating the series, winning seven straight and 14 of the last 15 games. However, the Huskies pulled off a stunning upset last season, overcoming an 11-point deficit to defeat the then-No. 7 Bulldogs 78-73 at Alaska Airlines Arena.

The Washington Huskies will have to wait another year to face their in-state rivals.

The cancellation of the game is a disappointment for fans of both teams, particularly given the excitement surrounding the Huskies’ new coaching staff, led by former Utah State head coach Danny Sprinkle. Sprinkle has already made a significant impact, bringing in reigning Mountain West Player of the Year Great Osobar from Utah State to join the Huskies for his senior season.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs, meanwhile, will have to focus on their non-conference schedule, which includes a trip to the Bahamas for the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, as well as games against Kentucky in Seattle and back-to-back national champion UConn at Madison Square Garden.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs will face a tough non-conference schedule this season.

The West Coast Conference schedule will also be a challenge for the Bulldogs, with the additions of Washington State and Oregon State as affiliate members starting next season. Gonzaga will face the Cougars and Beavers twice each, making for a grueling 18-game conference schedule.

While the cancellation of the Gonzaga-Washington game is a disappointment, fans of both teams can take comfort in the fact that they will have plenty of opportunities to see their teams in action this season. And who knows? Maybe next year, the rivalry game will be back on the schedule.

The 2024-25 college basketball season is shaping up to be an exciting one.
