A Star in the Making: Trey McKenney and the Future of Michigan Basketball
As a lifelong Michigander and basketball enthusiast, I’ve had the privilege of watching some incredible talent come through the Great Lakes State. But none have caught my attention quite like Trey McKenney, the top-ranked basketball recruit in Michigan and a rising star in the class of 2025.
Standing at 6-foot-4 and possessing a deadly shooting stroke, McKenney has been making waves in the high school basketball world with his dominance on the court. As a shooting guard for St. Mary’s Prep, he’s led his team to a 27-1 season and a state championship, earning himself a slew of accolades and attention from top college programs.
McKenney’s impressive skills on the court have earned him a reputation as one of the top prospects in the country.
But what sets McKenney apart from other top recruits? For starters, his work ethic and dedication to his craft are unmatched. As someone who’s had the chance to watch him play firsthand, I can attest to the fact that he’s always giving 110% effort on the court, whether it’s in practice or in the midst of a high-stakes game.
And then there’s his remarkable ability to perform under pressure. In the state championship game, McKenney dropped 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, leading his team to a decisive victory. It’s clear that he’s got the clutch gene, and that’s something that will serve him well at the next level.

So where does McKenney’s future lie? With a slew of top programs vying for his attention, it’s anyone’s guess at this point. But one thing’s for sure: he’s got the talent, the drive, and the heart to succeed at the highest level. As a Michigan fan, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he’ll choose to stay in-state and join the Wolverines, but wherever he ends up, I have no doubt that he’ll make a lasting impact on the college basketball world.
As Michigan head coach Dusty May looks to rebuild the Wolverines’ program, he’d be wise to make McKenney a top priority. With his incredible skills and tireless work ethic, McKenney has the potential to be a game-changer for the Maize and Blue. And who knows? Maybe one day we’ll see him leading the Wolverines to a national championship.
The future is bright for Trey McKenney, and I’m excited to see where his journey takes him.
