The Coolest Leader in the Game: Obama Supports Team USA Basketball
Former President Barack Obama recently made a special appearance at an exhibition game between Canada and the United States ahead of the Paris Olympic Games. The Forever President was seen in high spirits, mingling with the Team USA men’s basketball team and coaching staff, including Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra and Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr.
Obama shows his support for Team USA
As Obama interacted with the players, he was seen giving very presidential handshakes and even shared some words of encouragement. “It is true I am the Hooper-in-Chief,” he told the team. “I just want to come here to help send off the soon-to-be gold medal winners. We invented this game, and I don’t like it when we don’t win.”
The former president’s visit to the team sparked a lot of excitement among the players, with some of them even fanboying over the opportunity to meet him. Golden State Warriors star and Team USA member Steph Curry said, “To have President Obama come – and he’s great with the microphone and really inspiring with his words – it was cool to set us off into this journey this summer with celebrating the 50 years of USAB and what we’re trying to do this summer.” Curry even admitted to getting goosebumps while Obama was talking.
The whole scene was reminiscent of a hilarious comedy sketch from Key & Peele, in which Jordan Peele portrays Obama code-switching in a meeting with various people. The similarity was not lost on social media users, who couldn’t help but draw parallels between the two.
