Redemption Road: How the USA 3X3 Men’s Basketball Team is Gunning for Olympic Gold

The United States and basketball are synonymous, like Brazil and soccer, or Canada and ice hockey. But despite its dominance on the international stage, the country’s 3X3 men’s basketball team has had a rocky road to the Olympics. This summer, they’re looking to make a statement in Paris.

The team failed to qualify for the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo, a disappointment that still lingers. But this year, they’re determined to make up for lost time. With three players hailing from Colorado, the team has a distinct Rocky Mountain flavor that’s driving their quest for redemption.

The Rise of 3X3 Basketball

The International Olympic Committee announced the addition of 3X3 basketball to the 2020 Summer Olympics in 2017. Since then, the sport has taken off, with organizations like Denver-based Hoop It Up and Spokane Hoopfest contributing to its growth in popularity. FIBA, basketball’s international governing body, has hosted tournaments around the world, giving local teams and players a platform to shine.

Overcoming Adversity

For player Kareem Maddox, the road to the Olympics has been a long and winding one. He was part of the team that failed to qualify for the 2020 Olympics, and the bitter taste of defeat still lingers. But Maddox is quick to point out that the team’s lack of success wasn’t due to a lack of talent – it was simply a case of not gelling on the court.

“We just didn’t figure out how to play together most effectively and efficiently in the time that we had,” Maddox said.

Fast-forward to 2024, and the team is looking like a well-oiled machine. With players like Canyon Barry, who picked up an injury right before the qualifying tournament and couldn’t participate, and Jimmer Fredette, who’s brought a new level of energy to the team, they’re looking fierce.

A Gritty Team

Head coach Joe Lewandowski described this year’s team as “gritty,” and it’s easy to see why. With a mix of seasoned pros and talented newcomers, they’ve got the perfect blend of experience and enthusiasm.

“I think we lapped the world twice at least with these guys,” Lewandowski said. “And that’s gritty. They’ve earned that every step of the way.”

As the team prepares to take on the best of the best in Paris, they’re feeling confident. With a string of top-six finishes in recent competitions, they’re on a roll.

Redemption in Paris

The USA 3X3 Men’s Basketball Team knows that this Olympics is their chance to prove themselves. They’re not just representing their country – they’re representing the sport they love.

“We’re not just playing for ourselves,” Maddox said. “We’re playing for everyone who’s come before us and will come after us.”

As they take to the court in Paris, the world will be watching. Will they bring home the gold? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure – they’re ready to put on a show.
