A New Era for NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee
The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee has appointed Irma Garcia, Manhattan Athletics Director, to its esteemed group. This marks a significant milestone, as Garcia becomes the seventh woman to serve on the committee. Her five-year term begins immediately and will run through August 31, 2029.

Garcia’s impressive resume boasts 35 years of service at St. Francis Brooklyn, where she started as the women’s basketball coach from 1988-1999. She then took on the role of associate athletics director from 1999-2007 and eventually became the athletics director from 2007-2023. During her tenure, Garcia earned numerous accolades, including the Northeast Conference women’s basketball Coach of the Year in 1998 and the FCS Administrator of the Year in 2014-15.
“I am thrilled to be selected as the MAAC representative on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee,” Garcia said. “This is without question an opportunity to elevate Manhattan College, our conference, and Division I men’s basketball. I’m excited to get started working alongside my fellow committee members. The best is yet to come!”
