Basketball Buddies and Roadtrippin’ Adventures in Alaska
As I laced up my running shoes and hit the track at Central Middle School, I never expected to stumble upon a kindred spirit in Rex Sharp, aka T-Rex Sharp. This cool older guy with sunglasses was dribbling a basketball, and I couldn’t resist offering my services as a rebounder for his missed shots. Little did I know, this chance encounter would lead to a wonderful conversation and a new friendship.
Rex Sharp in action
Rex, a Toledo transplant, has been living in Anchorage for almost 40 years. He worked as an equipment operator for the City of Anchorage for 27 years and raised his family here. With 17 children and numerous grandchildren, Rex has a wealth of stories to share. As we shot hoops, we reminisced about old basketball stars and how the NBA was back in the day. I was struck by his fun banter and kind spirit.
A delicious seafood feast at Fairbanks Chowder House
But Rex isn’t the only Alaskan adventure I’ve had recently. Our Roadtrippin’ crew embarked on a journey to Fairbanks, where we stopped at the iconic Chowder House for a belly full of seafood. The open road in Alaska is full of surprises, and this pit stop was a highlight of our trip.
A photo op at the Trans-Alaska Pipeline
We also made a photo stop at the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, a marvel of engineering that never ceases to amaze. And for the thrill-seekers, we suited up with Glacier Jet Ski Adventures to explore 60 miles of open water and into Blackstone Bay.

As I reflect on these experiences, I’m reminded that sometimes a simple hello and interest can lead to wonderful conversations and new friendships. Rex Sharp, aka T-Rex Sharp, is a testament to the power of human connection.
“The best part of touring the open road in Alaska is the roadside pit stops; specifically, all the new food and experiences you can find at every turnoff.” - Me
