Former German Basketball Coach Reflects on His Departure
Gordon Herbert, the Canadian coach who led the German national basketball team to a series of impressive victories, has recently spoken out about his decision to leave his position as head coach of the Deutscher Basketball Bund (DBB). In an interview with the German newspaper Die Welt, Herbert revealed that he had been interested in continuing his work with the DBB, but ultimately was unable to come to an agreement with the organization.
A New Chapter Begins
According to Herbert, the DBB’s rules prohibiting coaches from holding dual roles – in this case, coaching both the national team and a club team – made it impossible for him to continue in his position. This was a major factor in his decision to step down as head coach after the Olympic Games. Herbert has since taken on a new role as coach of the German basketball club Bayern München.

Herbert also cited the upcoming changes in the national team as a reason for his departure. With a new team to be built, he felt that he would not have enough time to see the project through to its completion, given that he only had one year left on his contract.
A New Coach Takes the Helm
Herbert was not involved in the search for his successor, and was only informed of the decision to appoint Alex Mumbru as the new head coach on the eve of the official announcement. Herbert expressed his surprise at not being consulted on the matter, and revealed that he would have preferred to see one of his assistant coaches, either Bret Brielmaier or Klaus Perwas, take on the role.

Herbert also addressed speculation that he had left the DBB for financial reasons, stating that he had received higher offers from other clubs, but had chosen to stay in Germany because of his love for the country and its people.
A New Era for German Basketball
As Herbert begins his new chapter with Bayern München, the German national team embarks on a new era under the leadership of Alex Mumbru. With a new team to be built and a fresh start on the horizon, the future of German basketball looks bright.
