From the Bahamas to the Dome: Donnie Freeman’s Journey to Syracuse

Syracuse University’s incoming freshman Donnie Freeman has already had a taste of international basketball, representing the Bahamas in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Valencia, Spain. The 18-year-old sensation shared his experiences with me, from training with NBA veterans to adjusting to a new style of play.

“I had to grow up quick,” Freeman said, recounting the challenges he faced during the tournament. “I was playing against pros. I had to get used to the speed of the game and the physicality.”

Freeman, ranked No. 6 in the 2024 recruiting class by ESPN.com and on3.com, certainly held his own against some of the world’s top talent. Despite being the youngest player on the team, he showed remarkable poise and maturity in his debut international outing.

The Bahamas, ranked 57th in FIBA’s world rankings, pulled off several upsets during the tournament, including a thrilling win over Finland. Freeman, however, had to adapt to a reduced role, playing just five minutes in the victory. “I had never been in that position before,” he said. “I’ve either played or had a role. This was different. This was such a small window. It was tough.”

Despite the challenges, Freeman learned valuable lessons from his teammates, including NBA veterans like Buddy Hield and Eric Gordon. He also drew inspiration from 25-year-old center Deandre Ayton, who became a mentor during the tournament. “Deandre took me under his wing,” Freeman said. “He was a real role model. On the court and off the court, really. On the court, there were little things he’d teach me.”

Freeman is now set to bring his international experience to the Syracuse campus, where he hopes to make an immediate impact. “They’re excited for me to get up there,” he said of the SU coaches. “They want to help me reach my goals, and I want to help get Syracuse basketball back to where it needs to be.”
