From Court to Clipboard: Molly Davis’s Journey to Coaching

As I sat in the stands watching the Iowa Hawkeyes take on Illinois at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, I couldn’t help but notice the fire in Molly Davis’s eyes. The guard’s passion for the game was evident in every pass, every shot, and every defensive play. It was clear that she was a player who wore her heart on her sleeve. Little did I know, Davis’s love for basketball would soon take her down a new path - the path of coaching.

Fast forward to the present, and Davis has joined the University of Evansville women’s basketball coaching staff as a graduate assistant. It’s a move that may come as a surprise to some, but for those who know Davis, it’s a natural progression. “When her coaches at Iowa reached out to me about Molly’s interest in our graduate assistant position, I knew right away she would be a great fit,” said Evansville Coach Robyn Scherr-Wells. “She has a high basketball IQ and is a hard worker.”

I’ve had the chance to speak with Davis, and it’s clear that she’s eager to bring her knowledge and experience to the next generation of players. “I’m excited to be a part of the Evansville program and to help these young women grow both on and off the court,” she said.

As Davis begins her coaching career, she’ll undoubtedly draw on her experiences as a player. During her two seasons with the Hawkeyes, she started 27 games, averaging 5.9 points per game. It’s this experience that will serve her well as she navigates the world of coaching.

So what can we expect from Davis as a coach? For one, she’ll bring a level of enthusiasm and dedication that’s hard to match. She’s a player’s coach, someone who understands the game from a player’s perspective. She’ll be able to relate to her players, to motivate them, and to push them to be their best.
