A Closer Look at the New Talent

The quartet of transfers encompasses three junior players and one sophomore, each bringing unique skills and experiences from their previous teams.

Jazmyne Jackson

Coming to the Eagles from Grambling State, Jazmyne Jackson is a versatile guard standing at 5-7. During her sophomore year, she showcased her scoring ability, averaging 8.0 points per game across 33 games. Notably, Jackson secured a game-winning three-pointer against Oral Roberts, propelling her team to a thrilling 93-91 victory in the WNIT. Her resilience and competitive spirit have earned her the SWAC Women’s Basketball Impact Player of the Week honors.

Deannasty Smith

Deannasty Smith, a 6-1 forward hailing from San Antonio, Texas, played for Northwest Florida State College last season. While her average of 2.0 points per game might not stand out, what she brings to the table is defensive grit and the willingness to work hard to improve her game. Her high school accolades include being named to the second team All-Region.

Nakiyah Mays-Prince

This 5-5 guard from Chicago played two seasons at Delaware, where she became an integral part of the Blue Hens, accumulating 6.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game during her freshman year. Mays-Prince’s court vision and playmaking capabilities will be assets to the Eagles’ backcourt.

Paris Gaines

Rounding out the transfers is center Paris Gaines, standing tall at 6-3, who comes from the University of Kansas. Though her playing time was limited as a Jayhawk, averaging just 2.3 points per game, her imposing presence in the key and her ability to contribute defensively cannot be overlooked. Her high school career included impressive defensive stats, with an average of 5.7 blocked shots per game during her senior season.

The Fresh Faces: Twin Talents and Local Gems

In addition to the transfers, the Eagles welcome three incoming freshmen who are expected to make their mark in the upcoming season.

Jamiria and Tamiria Jones

These talented twin sisters from Birmingham, Alabama, have immense potential. Jamiria Jones, with an impressive average of 20 points, four assists, and seven rebounds during her senior season, has already earned accolades as a third team All-State player. Tamiria, on the other hand, had a notable senior year averaging 15 points, six rebounds, and three assists, culminating in her being named a first-team All-State selection. Their experience of competing in back-to-back state championship games will bring invaluable winning mentality to the team.

Ashantay Noble

Noble’s basketball IQ and competitive nature are sure to energize the squad.

Coach Haden’s Vision for the Future

Coach Haden’s enthusiasm about the new additions is evident as she expressed her excitement for the program’s future. “The addition of these seven players to round out our 2024 recruiting class is very exciting for the future of our program. While we will have six seniors to replace in the 2025 class, these seven will provide us a great nucleus to build around and hopefully allow for some great continuity going forward.”

“These players aren’t just qualified athletes; they bring a spirit to the court that can elevate our entire team. We’re focused on building a legacy,” Coach Haden underscored, reflecting her commitment to establishing a competitive program.
