A New Era for BYU Basketball: Mawot Mag Joins the Cougars
As the college basketball landscape continues to evolve, BYU has made a significant move to bolster its roster with the addition of Rutgers transfer Mawot Mag. The 6-foot-7 wing brings a wealth of experience and defensive prowess to the Cougars, and I couldn’t be more excited to see him take the court.
The Cougars are gearing up for a big season
Mag, a native of Sudan who immigrated to Melbourne, Australia, at the age of two, has already made a name for himself in the Big Ten Conference. During his four-year stint at Rutgers, he appeared in 80 games, starting in 41, and averaged 5.5 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. But it’s his defensive skills that truly set him apart. Last season, he was one of the top defensive players in the Big Ten, and I have no doubt he’ll bring that same intensity to Provo.
“Defense wins championships” is a cliché, but it’s especially true in college basketball. With Mag on board, the Cougars are poised to make a serious run in the 2024-25 season.
Mawot Mag brings a strong defensive presence to the Cougars
Mag’s decision to join BYU was likely influenced by the program’s reputation for developing players and its commitment to academic excellence. As a Top 247 recruit in the class of 2020, he’s no stranger to high-level competition, and I’m excited to see him thrive in the Cougars’ system.
With Mag on board, the Cougars now have 11 scholarship players for the 2024-25 season, leaving two scholarships remaining in the first year under head coach Kevin Young. It’s clear that Young is building a team that can compete at the highest level, and I’m eager to see how it all comes together.
The future is bright for BYU Basketball
As the season approaches, I’ll be keeping a close eye on Mag and the Cougars. With their new addition, they’re poised to make a serious impact in the college basketball world. Stay tuned, folks – it’s going to be a wild ride.
