Howard, 43, brings a wealth of experience to Bobby Hurley’s staff, having worked under renowned coaches such as Bill Self at Kansas and Chris Beard at Texas. His most recent stint was at Southern Illinois, where he spent the 2023-24 season on the staff under Bryan Mullins.
“The 43-year-old Howard played for the Illinois Fighting Illini and is from Peoria, Ill.”
Prior to his coaching career, Howard played for the Illinois Fighting Illini and later started his coaching career at his alma mater from 2007-12. He then joined Larry Brown’s staff at SMU for a single season before moving to Kansas, where he spent eight seasons under Bill Self.

The hiring of Howard is a significant boost to Hurley’s staff, which is facing a near-complete roster rebuild after the 2023-24 season. With top players like Frankie Collins transferring out, the Sun Devils will need to rebuild their team from scratch.

Howard’s experience as a recruiter and his ability to build strong defenses will be crucial in helping the Sun Devils rebuild their team. His addition to the staff is a significant step in the right direction for Arizona State basketball.
