AAMU Women’s Basketball Receives Major Donation from CREEJ

The Alabama A&M women’s basketball program has received a significant donation from the Center for Rural Enterprise and Environmental Justice (CREEJ). The donation, a golf cart, was presented to the team on Tuesday morning at the AAMU Event Center.

The golf cart donation will help the team transport recruits, alumni, and potential donors around the campus.

According to Coach Thornton, the golf cart will be a valuable asset to the team. “We have a walking campus,” she said. “This golf cart will allow us to transport recruits, alumni, and potential donors who come to visit our amazing campus. It has endless possibilities and we are so thankful to Dr. Catherine Coleman Flowers and the Center for Rural Enterprise and Environmental Justice for this donation.”

About Coach Thornton

Coach Thornton enters her first season as the head women’s basketball coach at Alabama A&M and has more than 17 years of experience as a collegiate coach. Prior to coming to Huntsville’s only Division I University, Thornton spent five seasons as the head coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

About CREEJ

CREEJ was founded in 2019 by Dr. Catherine Coleman Flowers, a MacArthur Fellow. The organization’s mission is to seek the implementation of best practices to address the reduction of health and economic disparities, improve access to clean air, water, and soil in marginalized rural communities by influencing policy, inspiring innovation, catalyzing relevant research, and amplifying the voices of community leaders. This is done within the context of climate change and through the lens of environmental justice.

“It’s a privilege to be able to support Coach Thornton and her wonderful program,” Dr. Flowers said. “CREEJ is committed to helping Alabama A&M University and the other great educational institutions in Huntsville, and the students they serve. Many of the students live in or will serve communities impacted by climate change or environmental justice.”

The donation from CREEJ is a significant contribution to the Alabama A&M women’s basketball program and will help the team in its efforts to succeed on and off the court.
