A New Chapter for Babson Basketball
As I sat in the stands, watching the Babson College men’s basketball team take on their opponents, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride and nostalgia. The team, led by head coach Stephen Brennan, had just won their second consecutive New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) championship, and the energy in the arena was electric.
But little did I know, this would be the last time I would see Matthew Droney, a key member of the coaching staff, on the sidelines. Droney, a 2017 national champion and former player, had just been announced as the new head boys’ basketball coach at Dexter Southfield, a nearby school.

I had the chance to speak with Droney, and he shared his thoughts on his time at Babson and his decision to leave. “I want to thank Babson for an incredible five years as an assistant coach and three years as a player,” he said. “With the exception of COVID, we made the NCAA Tournament in every season and achieved new heights as a program. Babson has been an enormous part of my life, and having the chance to coach here has been the honor of a lifetime.”
Droney’s departure is bittersweet for the Babson community. On one hand, it’s exciting to see him take on a new challenge and lead a team of his own. On the other hand, it’s sad to see him go, as he has been an integral part of the program’s success.
Matthew Droney
As I reflected on Droney’s time at Babson, I couldn’t help but think about the impact he had on the program. He was a key member of the coaching staff, helping the team win two NEWMAC championships and make four straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
But Droney’s impact went beyond just his coaching abilities. He was a role model for the players, both on and off the court. He was a leader who led by example, and his passion for the game was infectious.

As I looked around the arena, I saw a team that was built on a foundation of hard work, dedication, and teamwork. The players were all smiling, laughing, and high-fiving each other, and it was clear that they had formed a bond that went beyond just their time on the court.
Droney’s departure may be the end of an era, but it’s also a new beginning. The team will have to adjust to a new coach, but they will also have the opportunity to grow and develop under new leadership.

As for Droney, he’s excited to take on the challenge of leading a new team. “I was so impressed with the quality of people at Dexter and their shared vision for the boys’ basketball program,” he said. “I look forward to building a program centered around good people that want to be a part of something bigger than themselves.”
I have no doubt that Droney will succeed in his new role. He has the passion, the knowledge, and the leadership skills to build a successful program.

As I left the arena, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement for the future. The Babson College men’s basketball team may be losing a key member of their coaching staff, but they will always have the memories of their time together.
And who knows? Maybe one day, Droney will return to Babson, and the team will have the chance to welcome him back with open arms.
